Chodov fortress

Chodov fortress

Originally a medieval moated fortress, it served as a defensive stronghold surrounded by a moat. Over the centuries, it changed both owners and appearance, from the Knights of the Order of the Holy Land to the Benedictines, who converted it into a Baroque manor house in the 17th century. The fortress acquired its current Classicist appearance with an arcaded courtyard in the early 19th century under the leadership of the Korb family of Weidenheim. In the 20th century, the building underwent a fundamental transformation. After a period of neglect, the fortress was sensitively renovated for cultural purposes between 1984 and 1988. Historical elements were preserved and integrated with modern uses, creating a unique space in the heart of Jižní Město. Today, Chodovská tvrz is a popular cultural center operated by the organization KULTURNÍ JIZNÍ MĚSTO, o.p.s.

New Town Hall

New Town Hall

The New Town Hall is participating in this year’s 19th Prague Museum Night, during which you can visit Prague’s most famous museums and other participating institutions throughout the city. This unique event offers a rare opportunity to explore the cultural riches of our city in a truly special atmosphere, and before the coronavirus pandemic, tens of thousands of people attended it every year. This year, after a hiatus of several years, it will certainly be no different… The New Town Hall is one of Prague’s national cultural monuments, and its history began shortly after the founding of Prague’s New Town by Charles IV in 1348. Currently, exhibitions, concerts, festivals, wedding ceremonies, and other cultural or social events are held here in unconventional ceremonial spaces that are not normally open to the public. However, during Prague Museum Night, you can explore them. You can view the Baroque CHAPEL on the first floor of the tower, originally a Gothic chapel, later dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. Wenceslas, patron saint of the Czech lands. In 1722, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style, elements of which have been preserved, such as the central vault decorated with a fresco depicting the allegory of Law and Justice, and the profiled entrance portal. The chapel has been restored. - The GREAT HALL on the first floor of the tower is open to visitors; its walls feature remnants of 16th-century murals, and there are three columns in the center - The COUNCIL CHAMBER on the ground floor is open for viewing; it is furnished with beautiful period furniture, and its centerpiece is the original painted wooden ceiling - A tour of the MÁZHAUS, a Gothic columned hall on the ground floor with a stone floor, vaulted ceiling, and remnants of original wall paintings - Tour of the original STATUE of Neptune, carved from fine sandstone, in the wedding entrance hall on the ground floor, created between 1875 and 1877 by sculptor Bohuslav Schnirch - Tour of the cobblestone COURTYARD with a fountain and well, featuring cushions by sculptor Veronika Psotková for visitors to sit on
Artbiom Display Cases

Artbiom Display Cases

In the exhibition *The Space of the Body*, the human body is viewed not only as a physical representation of a person, but also as a space with its own rules. A space that is simultaneously part of another, larger space. A world within a world, whose boundaries are illusory and which constantly permeates everything around it. As humans, we are part of other bodies, yet we often speak of them as something that does not quite belong to us. Something that has a will of its own, so to speak. We are all a unique combination of the human and the non-human within a seemingly impenetrable shell. This shell, however, is not impenetrable, and it is not only we who inhabit it, but other organisms as well. How, then, should we approach this shared space, and how should we work with the idea of modifying our own bodies? How can we attune ourselves to the integration of our bodies into a vast, all-encompassing network of relationships, and how can we incorporate other bodies—those living outside our own—into this perspective?
Klaus Synagogue

Klaus Synagogue

Please accept our invitation to visit the largest surviving synagogue in Prague’s Jewish Quarter. The Early Baroque Klausová (not Klausova) Synagogue is located in close proximity to the Old Jewish Cemetery. Three smaller buildings, known as “klauses,” had stood on this site since the 16th century—including a yeshiva, a Jewish school for the study of the Talmud, founded by the renowned Rabbi Löw. Five years after the ghetto fire of 1689, the only early Baroque synagogue was built on the same site.  The Klaus Synagogue was the second main synagogue of the Prague Jewish community; many of its prominent rabbis served here, and it also served as the prayer hall of the Prague Burial Society. From the outside, it is a very unassuming building, but an even greater surprise awaits visitors inside: a magnificent space with stained-glass windows and a beautiful Torah ark. The view from the gallery into the spacious interior is breathtaking. Currently, the space is open only for short-term exhibitions and is awaiting renovation.

Museum of Senses

The Museum of Senses is an interactive experiential museum in the heart of Prague that takes visitors on a journey into the world of the senses, perception, and unexpected sensory illusions. Unlike traditional museums, visitors here are not merely observers—they become an active part of the exhibition itself. Interactive installations, playful exhibits, and spaces await them, demonstrating how easily our perception can be influenced by what we see, hear, or feel. During their visit, they can try out, for example, a bed of nails, the Vortex Tunnel, rooms that play with perspective, balance, and space, or other installations that combine fun with a light educational element. The visit can also be enhanced with additional experiences. Sense Quest guides visitors through the exhibition in the form of a fun and educational game; the Mimiko Game combines QR code hunting with tasks throughout the museum; and Mystery Gift adds an element of surprise in the form of a small gift. Thanks to these extras, visitors can enjoy the museum even more actively and take home an additional experience from their visit. The Museum of Senses is ideal for families with children, students, couples, and all curious visitors who want to enjoy Prague Museum Night a little differently—actively, playfully, and with all their senses.

Do you understand the speech of your grandparents, friends, or acquaintances from other parts of our country when they speak in dialect? And do they understand you? – ask the curators of the exhibition “Critically Endangered Phenomena of Our Dialects.” The exhibition offers visitors dialect maps, authentic audio recordings from various periods, and interactive elements that show how language has changed over the decades. One of these elements is a sound map featuring both archival and more recent recordings that document the dynamics of dialect development over the past fifty years. The exhibition showcases the richness and diversity of dialects, highlights their gradual decline, and presents research findings. As part of the exhibition, you can participate in dialect mapping research conducted by the Dialectology Department of the Institute of the Czech Language of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Brno.
